THE GREATEST COMMANDMENTS

Matthew 22:15-46

Key Verses: 22:37-39

“Jesus replied: ‘“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.””

1. Read verses 15-22. With whom did the Pharisees collaborate and why? (15-16a) What flattering question did they ask and how was it a trap? Why did Jesus call them hypocrites? What did Jesus teach them and us? (19-21) What does this show about Jesus? (22)

2. Read verses 23-33. Who were the Sadducees and why did they make up this story? (23-28) What kinds of thoughts occupied their minds? What was the fundamental error that caused them to ask a wrong question? (29) What can we learn about life at the resurrection? What can we learn from the Scriptures about the power of God regarding the resurrection?

3. Read verses 34-38. What question did an expert in the law ask Jesus? Why did he think that this was a hard question? What does it mean to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all you mind”? Why is this commandment the first and greatest of all?

4. Read verses 39-40. What does it mean to “love your neighbor as yourself?” How is the second most important commandment related to the first? In what sense do “all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments”? How does Jesus relate to the Law and the Prophets? (Galatians 3:13; Romans 3:21-24) How can we keep the greatest commandments? (Romans 3:30-31, 8:5)

5. Read verses 41-46. What question did Jesus ask the Pharisees and what did their answer mean? (41-42) How did Jesus challenge their assumption about the identity of the Messiah? What does this teach us about Jesus?
