THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST

Matthew 27:62-28:10

Key Verse: 28:20b

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

What happened to Jesus on Friday (which we call Good Friday)? (Matthew 27:31, 50-52, 58-61) Read Matthew 27:62-66. What did the religious leaders know about Jesus’ prophecy of his resurrection? How did the religious leaders think the prophecy would be fulfilled? What measures did they take to prevent Jesus’ prophecy from being fulfilled? How does this event help to prove Jesus’ resurrection on the third day (Sunday morning)?

Read 28:1. Who went to the tomb on Sunday morning (the first day of the week)? What do we know about Mary Magdalene and the other Mary? (Matthew 27:55-56, 61; Luke 8:2-3) Why does Matthew say they went to the tomb?

Read 28:2-4. What happened as the two women arrived? What all did Matthew say about the angel? What happened to the men guarding Jesus’ tomb?

Look at 28:2-6. Why did this event happen? (2-6; Acts 2:23,24) What does this event reveal about the power of God? What was the angel’s message? (6a) What did the angel tell them to do first? (6b) Why was this important to do? What mission did the angel give the women?

Read 28:8-10.  What were the women’s initial feelings after encountering the angel? What happened as they ran to obey the angel’s instructions? Why did they worship him? What were Jesus’ instructions?

Look at 28:6-7 again. What does it mean that Jesus was not there in the tomb, but was risen? (Romans 6:9; Matthew 28:18) What do we receive from Jesus’ resurrection? (Romans 10:9, 4:25, 6:4, 7:4; 1 Corinthians 6:14) Why must the resurrection message be shared? (Matthew 28:7, 18-20; 1 Peter 3:20-21) What are Jesus’ instructions to us post-resurrection? (Matthew 28:19-20) Why are these instructions important for us to obey?
