HONOR GOD WITH YOUR HEART

Matthew 15:1-20
Key Verses: 15:7-9

“You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’”

1. Read verses 1-6. Who criticized Jesus’ disciples and why? What did Jesus rebuke them for? (3) What example did he give? (4-6) To what traditions do we hold? What is more important than keeping tradition?

2. Read verses 7-9. How do Isaiah’s words shed light on the real problems of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law? Why is it important to worship God not with merely our lips and human rules but with our hearts and the word of God? (John 4:23,24)

3. Read verses 10-14. What truth does Jesus want us to understand? (10-11) How does this answer the religious leaders’ original accusation? (2) Why were they offended? What short parables did Jesus give about the Pharisees who rejected him? Why did he call them blind guides?

4. Read verses 15-20. What did Peter ask? Which parable was he talking about? (10,11) How did Jesus explain his teaching to his disciples? Why is God more concerned about the inner life than about ritual or outward religious activities? (Proverbs 4:23; Jeremiah 17:9,10)

5. How can we be holy people who have hearts that are close to God? (Psalm 51:10-12; 1 John 1:7-9; Romans 12:2)
